Benhuizen - who we are

Run by the van der Westhuizen family, Benhuizen Golden Retrievers are nestled at the foot of the Magalies mountain range on a spacious and lush green farm.

Our Golden Retrievers are family pets and are strong, healthy farm dogs. Our dogs are not confined to kennels, small camps or raised in a synthetically created protective environment, but enjoy the freedom and challenges of robust farm life.

This, of course, provides challenges, but there is also the upside of increased natural resistance to disease.

Prospective buyers of puppies are always welcome to visit us to meet the parents and have a cup of coffee

Why a pedigreed dog?

Buying a pedigreed dog enables the new owner to confirm the following important facts:

This may sound ridiculously obvious, but it will confirm that the puppy is, as far as breed is concerned, actually what it is claimed to be.

We have once, after a long and tiresome journey to buy an unregistered alleged purebred Labrador Retriever, arrived to find the puppies resembled a Jackal’s offspring more than anything else!

A registered breeder will always proudly introduce you to the puppies’ parents. This will give you the opportunity to anticipate the temperament and appearance of the puppy, once full grown.

In the case above the dam looked like a Lab but the sire was nowhere to be found - apparently conveniently lent out to someone else...

KUSA registration ensures new owners that they bought a puppy whose lineage can be traced back over many generations, confirming that the parents’ health status have been verified and that no accidental inbreeding ever occurred. This is most important to assure that vulnerabilities unique to specific breeds are not amplified by unverified breeding.

Why a Golden Retriever?

One of the most notable character traits of this breed is that it is not inherently aggressive, but friendly, very even tempered and affectionate. These traits make it one of the most popular dogs in the United States. The only temperamental hiccup we have seen in Golden retrievers is that, due to their gentle and sensitive nature, they may sulk for a few minutes after being scolded. Due to their tolerant and forgiving nature this lasts only for a short time before they’re back to their old agreeable self.

Goldens are also very energetic and playful, though gentle, which makes it the ideal companion for children of all ages and also a top family pet.

Even though these dogs are not aggressive, they are highly alert and aware of their environment, making them good watchdogs as well.

On top of all said above, it must be mentioned that Goldens are very intelligent and eager to please. This makes them highly trainable and future owners can therefore expect all the benefits coming with a well trained and disciplined dog.

Lastly there is the thing of, uh, well, status. Due to the fact that Goldens are rather pricey, they are seen as exclusive and therefore the new owner may bask in the newfound status a Goldie will bring.

The van der Westhuizen family has been breeding dogs for more than 20 years, starting out with Scottish Terriers, then Labrador Retrievers and have eventually lost their hearts to, in their opinion, the most wonderful dog of all - Golden Retrievers.

All dogs are KUSA (Kennel Union of South Africa) registered to ensure new owners that they bought a puppy with al the benefits mentioned in “Why a pedigreed dog” to the left on this page.

Our litters are delivered in our home to ensure 24/7 supervision until they are ready to go.

We will supply you with the parent’s relevant health certificates confirming hip, elbow and eye status.
